About the Earthquake in Kahramanmaraş


Two earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale took place in Pazarcık and Elbistan, Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023. A total of 2,724 aftershocks occurred.

According to initially available information from SAKOM, 31,643 people have lost their lives in Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Adana, Adıyaman, Osmaniye, Hatay, Kilis and Malatya and Elazığ. 158,165 people have been evacuated from quake-hit areas.

238,459 search and rescue workers from AFAD, JÖAK, DİSAK, PAK, Gendarmerie, DAK, Ministry of National Defense, UMKE, Ambulance staff, Fire Department, Ministry of National Education, Güven, NGOs, Volunteers, Security Units and Local Support Teams. A total of 9,793 teams from countries have contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to offer assistance and have been deployed to earthquake areas.

A total of 12,322 vehicles, including construction equipment including excavators, tractors, cranes, dozers, trucks, water tenders, trailers, graders and vacuum trucks have been deployed to the affected areas.

40 governors and more than 152 Local Authority and 68 provincial directors and 19 AFAD top directors have been assigned to disaster areas. In addition, 13 ambassadors and 17 personnel from Ministry of Foreign Affairs were assigned to the region for the coordination of international aid.

An air bridge have been built for the deployment of personnel and equipment. A total of 4,097 sorties have been made with 170 helicopters and 76 aircraft from The Air, Land and Naval Forces, the Gendarmerie, the Coast Guard, the Turkish Police, the Ministry of Health and The Directorate General of Forestry.

A total of 26 ships, 24 ships by the Naval Forces, and 2 ship by the Coast Guard Command were employed to deliver personnel and materials to the affected area.

 

Disaster Sheltering Group

A total of 2,072,848 blankets and 206.357 medical tents were sent to the 10 quake-hit provinces from AFAD, The Turkish Red Crescent and the Ministry of Family and Social Services and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. 155,379 AFAD Family Tent was installed in the region.

 

Disaster Nourishment Group

The Turkish Red Crescent, AFAD, the Ministry of National Defense, the Gendarmerie, Humanitarian Relief Foundation and foundations of Hayrat, Beşir and İnisiyatif sent 334 mobile kitchens, 86 catering vehicles, 33 mobile ovens and 252 service vehicles to the quake-hit areas.

16,208,638 units of hot meal, 3,648,010 units of soup, 13,295,356 liters of water, 18,909,911 pieces of bread, 9,506,375 treats and 1,787,341 units of beverage were distributed to the quake-hit areas.

 

Disaster Psychosocial Support Group

4 mobilized Social Service Centers are charged in Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Osmaniye, and Malatya provinces. 2,552 officers and 384 vehicles have been sent to the region. A total of 193,494 people, 166,703 in the quake-hit zone and 26,791 outside the affected areas was provided with psychosocial support.
